Leo Makes an F4 Debut

DEBUTANTS SECURE FOUR TOP PLACEMENTS AT RING DJURSLAND

A thrilling finale at the F4 Danish Championship in Ring Djursland, Denmark! Mikkel Pedersen clinched victory with Mathias Bjerre Jakobsen & Leo Robinson closely trailing. The excitement peaked when Leo made a daring overtaking attempt, swapping positions with Jakobsen on the penultimate lap. Read on…

STEP Motorsport introduced a new driver to Formula 4 at Ring Djursland over the weekend of the 3rd – 4th of September 2023, and the result was a collection of trophies and wide smiles.

Algerian racer Leo Robinson arrived at the eastern Jutland track without the opportunity to practice ahead of the weekend, but he showed no signs of hesitation; he was quick right from the start in the STEP race car.

In training, he already marked himself with the second-fastest lap time. In the qualifying session, he continued his impressive performance, although he settled for the third-best lap time, which determined his starting position for the first heat of the weekend. He convincingly converted this into a second-place finish after fifteen minutes of racing, and thanks to the reverse grid rules, Leo started the second heat from seventh position.

On Sunday morning, the second heat began, and within a few laps, Leo Robinson was once again making his way through the field. The young Algerian driver executed several precise overtakes and crossed the finish line in third place.

Just an hour and a half later, the penultimate heat started, and from sixth position on the grid, he once again moved forward, passing competitors with finesse before finishing in second place. These results from the first three heats meant that a green STEP race car would lead the field into the final heat.

With an experienced competitor alongside him, Leo quickly settled into second place, but the roles soon reversed, and he became the pursuer rather than the pursued. Throughout the race, Leo battled with two competitors to secure podium positions in the weekend’s final race. Just before the finish line, Leo seized an opportunity to challenge for the win, but it didn’t succeed and cost him the second position.

Leo himself was pleased with his debut weekend in Formula 4:
“It’s been really fun and educational. The Danish Formula 4 field is competitive, and the top drivers are very skilled, so I’m proud to be able to compete at that level,” he said, adding:
“In the last race, I saw a chance to go for the first place, and at first, it seemed like it might work, but the inner track had more bumps than I anticipated, so I couldn’t brake quickly enough. I managed to avoid taking anyone with me, but I did spin out quickly – but I still secured third place.”

With his first two trophies in hand – for third place in the race and for being the third-best rookie driver – the young Algerian driver is eager for more:
“I’m really looking forward to going to Padborg Park and experiencing the Night Race! It’s going to be an exciting race, and I’m definitely aiming to improve on today’s results,” he said.

For the team manager, the weekend has been a testament to the team’s capabilities:
“Leo undoubtedly has great talent, but he is also a dedicated and hardworking young man who strives to achieve his goals. He showed promise before the weekend, but it’s been a pleasure to see him develop almost lap by lap. There is more to come from him than we’ve seen so far, so I think we’re in for an exciting time in the last two races of the season,” said Morten Dons.

Fortunately, there are only two weeks until the next race in the Formula 4 championship. The Night Race will take place at Padborg Park on Saturday, September 16th.
